  1. Overall, I do not feel that the views the the vice presidential candidates were clearly expressed in the debate. Neither candidate could express an opinion without including a commercial for their running mate or a statistic about how their running mate voted in past senate elections. What will these VP candidates do once they are elected? That's my unanswered question.

  2. I'm seeing a lot of East facebook users agreeing with Ariana tonight. As well, Smithtown students tonight seem to be feeling everything from "suprised" to sarcastically threatening acts of violence following the debate.

I'll refrain from using names but one West student agrees with Ariana and writes, "[I'm] bothered that the debate was not about the vide presidents themselves but rather about their running mates."

A senior at East wrote on his page that he thinks Palin is a "miserable miserable bimbo."

Another East senior writes how she was becoming angry listening to Palin. Several other students have responded to her statement... all of which agreed with her.

And I will close with this thought from one last East senior who simply wrote... "I can see russia from my house!"

McCain/Obama are back in the ring on the 7th at Belmont Univ. in Nashville before coming to Hofstra (thats right... Long Island!!!) on the 15th. Both debates will air live on www.SmithtownRadio.com.

  3. In response to the question: What will these VP candidates do once they are elected?

The answer is.......nothing!! The only real VP centered question I heard was about the VP being part of the executive branch and what would happen if the president died. The honest truth is that the vice president doesn't do much. On the question of if the president died they both gave the answer of "i'd carry out what Obama/McCain would want." Which is a pretty generic answer, but they have to give that. If they said anything different the media and opposition would chastise them as having a different view than the running mate.

The VPs must promote their running mates and a main component of the Obama/Biden ticket is to hammer home that 4 years of McCain is 4 more years of George W. Bush and that is a message that resonates with people. Biden, being somewhat of a loose cannon himself, had to behave tonight and push Obama being a change agent and McCain being more of the same, both of which he did. Palin on the other had had to repair her tarnished image and focused more on herself and her views. Thats why you heard Biden refer to Obama and McCain a lot more than Sarah Palin. I think Palin did fine. She didn't appear to be anything like the "bimbo" (for lack of a better word) that she had looked like in recent interviews and I think to a regular voter she came across fine. I personally thought at the end she kind of fell apart a bit and she kept reciting the same scripted talking points, but I'm not sure if everyone will recognize that.

Overall I found the debate boring and predictable, both sides did what they had to do and I doubt this will be a game changer for anyone despite possibly Palin solidifying some republican support and boosting morale. Even so, that won't change much anyway.

  4. Dean's right- the vice president doesn't do much. It goes without saying though that the president DOES, and the fact of the matter is that in this election especially we have to consider the possibility of the vice president taking over the executive role, and more importantly, how competantly they would approach the position. Unfortunately I did not walk away from the debate (I rushed home fro work and only caught a little more than half of it all) with a new clear understanding of Biden and Palin's plans and what they are going to "do"-- they mostly reiterated and reinforced Obama's and McCain's plans.I happen to really like Biden and i thought he gave Palin a good whammy after one of her "maverick maverick maverick what else do i say uhh maverick" rants towards the end. I can't say Biden was SPECTACULAR but I found him more intriguing than Palin, who often sounded to me like a redundant infomercial "THE MAVERICK 2008 CALL NOW AND YOU'LL RECIEVE A SENATOR WHO GOES AGAINST PARTY LINES $19.95 PLUS SHIPPING AND HANDLING!"
